Aspirin Allergy
ASPIRIN (SALICYLATE)-FREE DIET
Aspirin—acetylsalicylic acid—is great for soothing headaches, but sometimes it can be a pain in itself. Certain unlucky people find that aspirin provokes hives, gastric distress, a runny nose, swollen eyes, asthma, or worse. These folks should not only avoid aspirin but all related compounds: anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen, as well as foods and drugs that contain tartrazine (yellow food dye no. 5) or sodium benzoate, a preservative.
For pain relief, acetaminophen (Tylenol, Datril) can usually be substituted safely.
Foods not allowed on a salicylate-free diet include:
o All alcoholic beverages except gin and scotch
o Almonds, Brazil nuts
o Apples, apricots, berries, cherries, grapes, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, melons
o Bakery goods
o Candies, gum
o Canned vegetables
o Cheese (processed)
o Cucumbers, peppers, olives, radishes, tomato sauce
o Dried fruits, including raisins and prunes
o Flavorings: mint, cloves, curry
o Hot dogs, lunch meats
o Ice cream, Jell-O
o Jams, jellies, honey
o Margarine
o Soft drinks, mineral water
o Sweetened breads
o Wine, wine vinegar
HINT: Beware of all foods artificially colored or flavored.
